Population Projections for Equitable Climate Action

Climate change threatens the well-being of human communities around the globe. Some communities are disproportionately affected given their demographic makeup. The Community Demographic Model (CDM) provides computer simulations of population dynamics and change and is widely adopted to investigate the relationships between population, economic, climate, and environmental changes. Integrated with Earth system climate models, CDM projections illuminate different communities’ resilience, vulnerability, and capacity to adapt—providing insight for climate research and actions to enhance equity and well-being.

Four models are available and elucidate past, current, and future trends in household formation, urbanization, and multiregional population interaction at global, national, local, and grid-cell levels.

The CDM is an open access, freely available model framework developed and applied in collaboration with colleagues across the research community. To support this important work or partner with us, contact: percc@popcouncil.org

The Community Demographic Model (CDM) is a project of Population, Environmental Risks, and the Climate Crisis (PERCC), an initiative of the Population Council. PERCC investigates the complex interactions and dynamics between people and their environment and helps to ensure that climate programs and policies are inclusive and rooted in the principles of equity.
